A sleep in for our guests and the team here at Marine Dynamics with a 10am launch this beautiful Sunday morning. The sharks were ready to go with our first sighting within 10 minutes of arriving. This was the large male we refer to as “Floppy” due to the rolled over tip to the dorsal fin. The first shark was quickly followed by four more in the next 15 minutes. Just after 11am we had a new arrival with a female shark over 3.0m in length sporting a passenger hitching a ride in the shape of a very small remora attached to the upper surface of the left pectoral fin. This is the second sighting in 2 weeks of a shark with a remora present, something not common in these waters, in fact before these two it has been approximately a year or so since we had seen one around the boat, a sight much more common in the warmer waters of the Indian ocean up the east coast here. “Mini Nemo” then made his presence known and stole the rest of the trip.
The afternoon trip started with the arrival of “Mini Nemo”, keeping with the active theme from the first trip he was just as interesting to watch as earlier. This trip saw many of the juveniles from the first trip return but there were a few sharks turn up for the first time today with “Brian” our recently tagged White shark coming by as well as the large female known to us as “Gray” and a large male just as big as “Gray” we have nicknamed “Tiger” and have known for over 2 years now with this animal noticed as he was covered it fresh bite marks that have now healed to dark pigmentated scars. A fantastic afternoon to be a shark cage diver.
