Starry skies met the first group this morning as we headed down to the harbour nice and early. Whilst it was a bit chilly as we left land the sun started to rise and warm things up and by the time we were settled in the Geldsteen it wasn’t too cold. The sharks also helped forget about the temperature as well with our first shark arriving 15 minutes after our anchor was laid. Whilst this was a smaller juvenile not fussed on sticking around it proved the starting point for a number of sharks to come in, including teo Ocearch satellite Spot tagged animals, an approximte 3.1m male “Poseidon” and a larger female “Helen”. Both were nice and active around the boat however “Helen” did not stay with us for long before heading off. We were also very lucky to see “Rosie” back again! We saw her only a few weeks ago at the Island however she would not break the surface for us to have a look at the injury that she sustained close to 3 months ago (more information here). Today she behaved much like what we are used to, coming by for numerous passes and also some great leaps out of the water. It was also fantastic to see that the injury, suspected to be from a boats’ propeller, has started to heal over very well in the last few months! The second trip of the day turned out to have just as many sharks as the first and also some fin-tastic activity from these sharks! We had a few individuals on this trip that were very interested in the bull kelp that was floating around the boat. Larger storms have a habit of dislodging the kelp and leaves it floating on the surface, as White sharks are very active surface hunters we find that they will investigate many floating objects and fondly refer to these sharks as our “vegetarian sharks”! Could this fantastic shark activity last all day? We didn’t have as many sharks this afternoon as the two earlier trips but the activity was still great. The persistant yet very welcome female we have been seeing frequently the last few days was still around, easily distinguished by her darker colour and the scarring on her head and leading edge of her dorsal fin. The most active and interesting of the trip was also the smallest, a juvenile with a bite wound infront of its dorsal on the right side came torpedoing into sight and showed everyone what we mean when we say “flying sharks”! A truly fantastic day out on the water with the sun shining and spectacular sharks all day…
