Conditions: A lovely day, especially after such stormy weather recently, with some swell and a light breeze.
Some great sightings from some great sharks; that’s what we wanted, and that’s what we got! After three days off of sea due to the weather, we were anxious to launch and see if any new sharks had entered the bay and if some of our recent visitors had decided to stay. Slashfin launched from Kleinbaai with clouds overhead and the sun breaking through, eventually burning away all of the cloud coverage. We only had to wait about 40 minutes before the first shark was spotted. This trip was dominated by the males, with our first shark a 3.3 meter male, soon joined by a large male we saw the other day, about 4.2 meters long. We did have 1 female, approximately 2.8 meters long, the smallest shark of the trip. She did not disappoint, coming very close to the cage, showing off her young streamlined body. We had some amazing sightings of all of our sharks, and even had one final visitor as we were packing up! We were getting ready to leave when a large 4 meter white shark approached the side of the boat, cruising towards the engines, then back towards the front of the boat before disappearing into the depths.
Our second trip launched with spirits high and hopeful that the sharks would be around when we returned. They did not disappoint! Most of our divers weren’t even dressed when our first shark approached. It was the female from our first trip, showing extreme curiosity for both the bait line and seal decoy. She was quickly joined by the first male and these 2 spent a large portion of the trip with us. Towards the end, we had a familiar face, or should I say fin, approach the decoy. It was “Clampo” a male white shark that we’ve seen during our trips the past couple of weeks. He has a distinct scar on his dorsal fin that is very similar to another white shark we know named Clampy, however Clampy is female. With some great sightings of some great sharks, we ended our trip with spirits even higher than they were when we first launched!
