Todays trip began with a beautiful ride out to the Geldsteen. After the previous night being quite chilly, it was a perfect sunny day. Once we had anchored it didn’t take us long to find a shark. In fact, within the first 5 minutes we had 4 different sharks come by! Of the 4 sharks, 2 decided to stick around the boat. They spent the next 20 minutes making frequent passes in front of the cage. Suddenly, a large grey and white figure emerged from deep in. Based on the size, we could immediately tell it was a shark we had seen yesterday that we call “Ingrid.” She is an amazing shark who’s power you can sense as soon as she enters the area. Our divers were lucky enough to spend most of the rest of the trip with her as she made slow passes by the cage, looking each diver in the eye. She was accompanied by a few smaller sharks as well, 2 of which were much more active towards the bait and seal decoy.
Our last 2 cages of the day were very lucky and were visited by a shark we call “Kwaai Kelly.” This is a very large shark, almost as large as “Ingrid” measuring in at approximately 4.2 meters. One of our divers in the cage noted that she had a blue mark on her snout. This is most likely due to curiously bumping against a boat with a fresh paint job. She’s a very active shark and while at our boat, she made several consistent attempts at the bait and decoy. Then she disappeared and it got quiet. It began to sprinkle and we could tell that a few of the divers were beginning to think that the sharks had left. However, after about 8 minutes, everyone on board gasped as “Kwaai Kelly” came flying out of the water with the seal decoy in her mouth surprising us all. It was an amazing site to see. After a visit from 12 beautiful great whites, with a boat full of happy divers, we headed back to shore.
