Sightings: Bronze whalers and Short-tailed stingray

Location: Joubertsdam

Water Temperature: Cold

Visibility: Low

An overcast start to the day but it did not take long for the sky to clear for a beautiful day out on sea with some fantastic conditions as a low swell and a very slight wind was seen in the bay. Today was one filled with golden sharks as the Bronze whalers took center stage. Our morning started off nicely with the first shark sighting of a Bronze whaler within 10 minutes of anchoring and the sightings continuing consistantly throughout the rest of the trip. There were some great passes seen by the cage for the divers to enjoy the view underwater and some awesome opportunities for those on board to watch as the sharks circled.

The second trip of the day was an exclusive for a family group visiting from Canada and the United States. Before heading onto anchor we made a quick trip out by the Cape Fur seal colony on Geyser rock, watching the animals happily basking in the sunshine before moving onto anchor in the Shallows. The group enjoyed a long dive in the water as the Bronze whaler activity continued from the morning and made some daringly close passes allowing an up close and personal view of the sharks gliding by.

To finish off the day, our third and final group made their way back to the days’ site and proceeded to enjoy the same fantastic Bronze whaler activity that the previous two trips experienced.

If you are looking to get up close and personal with the great white shark then Shark Diving in South Africa, and more specifically with Marine Dynamics, is a once-in-a-lifetime experience you won’t want to miss.
