We headed out from Gansbaai harbour into a glorious sunny morning for our first trip. Its always exciting going around Danger Point to head to our dive site. After a lovely ride we approached the shallows and got the cage ready and our divers geared up for some sharky action. It didn’t take us too long to get a shark this morning. And before long we had some excellent activity around the cage with these curious sharks! Our divers got face to face with an incredible predator that we are glad to have with our sporadic white shark sightings. We saw the small seal again around Slashfin, today it appeared that octopus was on the menu as he violently tossed the octopus around at the surface, demonstrating it’s the wild shallows out there! We also had a stingray cruise by the cage to check our divers out, a distant cousin of our sharks. With a happy boat of divers we headed back to the harbour to collect our second group of guests for the day.
We got back to the shallows again, with the sun high in the sky the afternoon was shaping up nicely, and with a stingray around the boat pretty quick again it looked encouraging that we’d see some more elasmobranchs around the boat. We waited a little while for our first shark, but it was worth the wait as we finally encountered both species of shark! This came with a quick anchor change, and as we were settling onto the new sight a excitingly large, dark shadow was seen cruising just under the waters’ surface behind the boat. With us all glancing into the distance from the back of the boat a Copper shark took advantage of our distracted states to pop up right in front of the cage. The rest of the trip continued much like so with some marveleous sightings off both species of shark and by the end we had two different White sharks, the large female new to the bay as of yesterday and a tiny juvenile Great White! To top this off the journey back to the harbour proved just as exciting as we watched a mother calf pair of Southern Right whales moving through the Shallows and one breaching multiple times in the distance.
The third and final trip for the day set off and enjoyed the sy bight of those same Southern Right whales in the distance on their way back to anchor. Once on anchor this group practice much patience as they waited for the sharks to appear. With time though they did as the afternoon progressed in a very bronzed fashion as the group enjoyed some fantastic sightings of the Copper sharks and learnt more about this relatively new sighting around our boat in Gansbaai.
