Conditions: Beautiful flat seas with a lot of sun.

This morning we headed out into the sunrise on a beautiful flat sea. Quickly the copper sharks arrived and our divers got into the cage. Not a moment later a small great white popped up from the deep and eagerly swam in front of our guests. As the trip progressed and the sun rose higher and warmer, the sharks became more and more active. A cape fur seal joined us and our guests were delighted as it swam around the boat – making our guests jealous as it splashed around in the cool waters. In the distance several southern right whales passed us. Soon a short-tailed stingray rose up from the deep, swimming past the cage several times.

When we arrived for our second trip at the cage, a big 4m great white was waiting next to our cage, before disappearing quickly into the deep. This didn’t defer our guests and they quickly suited up and got into the cage. Soon the copper sharks arrived, entertaining our guests, while the cape fur seal returned as well. An hour after we last saw the big white shark, a smaller one came up briefly to say hi. She hung around the boat for a while, before she too left for deeper waters. After what felt like too short of a time, we headed back to shore, and several guests decided a cold beer was better than warm soup.

Our third trip of the day was nothing short of incredible, with us spotting 2 huge Great White Sharks as well as some gorgeous Copper Sharks around the boat. we started off our dive with the Coppers and were having loads of fun with this schooling species as they hung around the boat, checking out our operation. A little while into the trip, there was an excited scream from the back of the boat when a humongous Great White Shark appeared, going under the boat and then reappearing just below the bait line, which she had a quick look at from below. This beauty would have been easy to confuse for a small submarine and we were all left in awe by her sheer size. She was a gentle giant, slowly passing the cage, who’s size she easily surpassed by about half a meter, perhaps even more! The divers got an incredible view as she moved right next to them underneath the water, coming up for us a couple of times to the delight of all on board.

We estimate this apex predator to be around 5.5 -6m in length and even the crew were stunned as to just how chunky this chickee was! With her massive self around the boat, the other sharks gave us a wide birth up until her disappearance. We then got a little more quality time with the Coppers before a second White Shark appeared from the depths. This was a sneaky girl, who would ambush from below and then head down almost vertically as can be seen from some of the pictures from the last trip. She was in the region of 4.5m, which is also quite large. We felt very privileged to have these big females about the boat, and a few of our divers got some nice views of this female from the cage before we slowly began to head for shore once more. Other highlights from today’s tour include a Cape Gannet who caught a fish right in front of the boat. We were also treated to the sight of a breaching Southern Right Whale calf as we head back into Kleinbaai harbour. It was a truly fintastic time on the Atlantic.
