Simply WOW! What a day. The conditions had improved after a week of up and down weather allowing a one day period of calm before a cold front hits us for the next few days. It was no just the conditions on the water today that was great but also our sightings, after a very slow period with touch and go activity from our White sharks in the bay we finished the day with sharks seen on both of our trips, a very successful day.
The first trip of the day had a sighting before we were even on anchor, not the fishy sort we were on the look out for but that of a Southern Right whale as we made our way into the Shallows. Not to disturb the animal we slowed down and made our way around it but still enjoyed the views of this large, magestic marine mammal. Once on anchor we had another marine mammal keep us company, a Cape Fur seal, the same one that has been spotted for over a week now in the area, whilst this seal was content to chase the Mullet around the boat we watched on waiting patiently for a shark to appear and after two hours it did! A male, approximately 3.3m in length, that we have seen in the last month around the boat slowly made its way towards us, its dark silhouette seen approaching from a distance with the Cape Fur seal porpoising close by. This shark stuck around for some time before disappearing towards the end of our trip, whilst he was seen around the boat he made some beautiful passes by the cage and attempt on the bait and decoy line, making this a fantastic trip for the morning group, one which we hoped to repeat for our second group.
The second and final trip of the day was just settling down after wiggling into their wetsuits when that Cape Fur seal showed up again, pre-occupied with watching the seal at the back of the boat many of us missed the dark shadow approaching the front of the boat but not one guest who from the top deck spotted the shark! A different shark to the one seen on first trip, measuring in at approximately 2.8m, this juvenile Great White made for a fantastic afternoon of viewing, coming and going from the boat, but giving all our guests a good view from on board and visiting each new cage that we dove!
Overall, today proved a stunning day to be out in the bay for the team of Slashfin and our guests, with great conditions and even better shark sightings!
