We headed to the Island this morning to try our luck in spotting some White sharks, unfortunately luck didn’t seem to be on our side and after a 2 hour wait we though to try our luck on a new site. It was decided that we would try the Summer diving area in the Joubertsdam and see if we could find some sharks. Close to 20 minutes of waiting and watching followed before our first White shark was spotted, a very pale coloured juvenile, a little on the shy side, however this shark was just the beginning as more began to arrive. We had a number of smaller individuals this morning, with “Francois”, one of our tagged and tracked sharks appearing and showing some active behaviour, something uncommon for this little male as we are used to seeing him exhibiting a slower, shyer behaviour around the boat. We also had two large males show up, one a very dark grey colour with a patch of parasites on its’ head, the other pale in comparison and not as eager to stick around. Thank you to all that joined us this morning, your patience was greatly appreciated and we hope the sharks were worth the wait for you all!
The second trip of the day started off much better than the first with our first shark spotted within moments of arrving back in the Shallows. We yet again had many of the juveniles around the boat that we had seen on the previous trip, with the addition of a large, female with a very dark dorsal surface and little scaring observed. This large shark made a few circles around the boat before making a fast paced attempt on the decoy, and whilst she was very impressive whilst around she unfortunately did not stay. With some beautiful sightings had this afternoon we headed back to the harbour just before the rain started.
