Another bright and early start for the Marine Dynamics team with a 7am launch from Kleinbaai harbour leading to us being the second boat out on the water. The sharks arrived about 15 minutes after we did with a very pale, bronze coloured juvenile the first to do so. Whilst the sharks appeared quickly the activity took a little while to pick up with the first juvenile very shy and not keen on approaching close and whilst the second shark, “Dolphin Fin” was happy to cruise by the cage she came and went quickly. The activity started to pick up with our third and fourth shark sightings of the morning and even more so when our fifth and sixth arrived, “Mini Nemo”, the little male with thre stunted right pectoral fin and “Gray” one of the largest sharks we are currently seeing measuring in at an approximate 4.2m in length.

The second trip of the day was off to a flying start with four different White sharks spotted within 20 minutes of our boat re-anchoring however the activity took a turn to the slower side and we picked up and tried elsewhere which proved to be a good move with more success on the new anchor. We had much of the same sharks as the first trip including “Mini Nemo” and “Gray” and some juveniles but had some new additions as well including a female we have seenonly a few times over the last week or so with some fishingline lodged in her left gill section, a male with an old bite scar on the left side of the trunk which we have not seen this year in the bay and “Floppy” the largest male White shark of the day, named so because of the rolled over tip to the dorsal fin.

The third and final trip of the day had “Mini Nemo” around on arrival, proving to yet again be a crowd favourite! The smale pale juvenile, the first shark of the day also reappeared for it’s third sighting of the day before disappearing as the large female “Gray” dominated the area around the boat. A new addition this afternoon was the last shark to be logged for the day, a juvenile with a acoustic tag attached on the left side, one of Dyer Island Conservations Trust’s study animals, this shark was tagged last year and was spotted back in the bya only yesterday.

A JAWSOME Happy 12th Birthday to Tane who celebrated his special day with us and the White sharks this morning!
