Another early start for Slashfin, we were yet again the first boat out, allowing us the choice of whichever anchor spot we wanted. Once we had settled in, it didn’t take long for a shark to appear, with ‘Mini Nemo’ coming by. He did not seem himself today as he was quite relaxed and happy to keep deep and cruise on by, and soon enough he disappeared. Not too long after a second shark appeared, a small male that we recognized instantly as a white shark we had seen the same time last year, with the tip of the dorsal fin missing as well as his caudal fin. However, the most distinguishable feature would be a strange look to his jaw, as if it hangs a little lower than it should. This doesn’t seem to hinder him as he looks to have grown a bit since we saw him last time.
Our second trip of the day had a bit more of a wait, with an hour passing before the first shark appeared. It didn’t take long for us to be visited by multiple white sharks. Within the first 30 minutes after our hour wait, we had two different 3 meter white sharks around the boat constantly going for the bait and decoy , as well as ‘Mini Nemo’ slowly cruising by. Such lucky divers to see 3 different white sharks when it wasn’t long ago that we were ecstatic to see just one!
The third trip of the day got off to a flying start as the male returned. He appeared to be round for most of the trip, disappearing and resurfacing time and time again. We also had some copper shark sightings this trip, filling the gaps where the white sharks were not in sight.
Our last trip of the day had a lucky charm onboard, with a white shark being spotted within 5 minutes of anchoring. It was the male from the previous trips with the droopy looking jaw. He was very curious about the seal decoy, until he suddenly turned and disappeared. We waited anxiously wondering where he had gone to when ‘Mini Nemo’ came flying out of the water with the seal decoy firmly between his teeth. What a fin-tastic sight! We were also lucky enough to be visited by several copper sharks, with both shark species staying with us for the entire trip. It was an outstanding day at sea today and we hope that tomorrow brings us the same great luck with these great sharks!
