It was a stunning day at sea today. We only had one trip as strong winds and a possible storm were predicted for the afternoon. We launched from Kleinbaai harbor with brilliant sunshine and within 10 minutes of our arrival at our dive location, a shark was approaching Slashfin. It was a small shark with white marks on its left pectoral fin. It didn’t take long before we had 2 more sharks approach the boat. One shark was a 3.4 meter long female and had one of our tags on it from last year. The other was a 2.8 meter long shark that was recently tagged this past week. It’s great to be able to show our divers our research work first hand. Those tags are what give us the information we need to better understand these amazing creatures and help us to educate others about their patterns and behaviors. Activity was constant today, with 2 more sharks arriving within the first hour of our trip. One of these sharks is 2.6 meters long and we saw it on our trip yesterday. It has white marks on the leading edge of its dorsal fin and also on the top of its body, just before the dorsal fin. The other shark was a 2.2 meter shark with a black scar running down its left side and a white scar near its caudal. “Scarlett” showed up for a bit as well, awning everyone on board with her massive size. At 4 meters long, she is an absolute beauty. The last two sharks were also females and sharks that have been recently adopted. One was “A Shark Has No Name” and the other was “3-Bird.” Both of these sharks are quite active and are always very interested in the seal decoy and bait line. After a couple hours of some great activity, we returned to the Great White House and everyone warmed up with a nice cup of hot soup while they watched their trip video. A great ending to a great day!
