With clouds lingering above, we wondered what animals would be lingering in the water waiting for us today. Our first trip began bright and early with the sun occasionally peaking out of the clouds. As we anchored we hoped that a shark or two would decide to come visit us. It took about an hour before we had a visitor, but boy was he a great one! ‘Mini Nemo’ had graced us with his presence. He is my personal favorite shark as he is always very curious and active and doesn’t let his stunted pectoral fin stop him. At approximately 3.3 meters long, when ‘Mini Nemo’ breaches out of the water, it is quite a sight to see! We were lucky enough to spend almost the entire trip with him, with everyone amazed by his antics.
As our second trip departed, the sun began to peak out of the clouds more and more. This trip must have brought the good luck because we only had to wait 10 minutes before ‘Mini Nemo’ came back for another visit. He breached back and forth, going for the seal decoy and bait line. At one point we had a huge flock of Cape cormorants flying past us, on their way to go hunt for fish for the day. We also got to see a large copper shark, also known as a bronze whaler. As our trip finished and we began to pack up, a Cape fur seal popped up next to the boat, almost as if to say hi and bye. What a splendid trip full of sea life!
The third trip for Marine Dynamics was an exclusive for two families visiting South Africa from Mexico. We launched and dropped anchor in the Shallows quickly, with a White shark appearing very quickly, which was none other than Mini Nemo, the male White shark with the stunted right pectoral fin that the previous two shark cage diving trips of the day had seen. Unfortunately he did not stick around long after making a few passes and disappearing. Not too long after this the Copper sharks made their presence known and stuck around for the rest of the trip. The nice visibility and the Copper sharks comfortable behaviour around the cage made for some great views for those in the water and also on board. We had a Cape Fur seal visit the boat towards the end, attempting and succeeding in catching some of the small mullet that we see.
Unfortunately, the White Sharks were a little elusive on the 4th trip of the day but, luckily, we had some gorgeous Bronze Whalers give us a great show! All in all, we had a lovely trip out on the water with incredible visibility and sharks from start to finish. We got our first animals just after we had anchored, with a few larger specimens coming up for a look. Our Copper Sharks remained quite curious throughout the dive, giving our clients some great underwater views! We also had a Cape Fur Seal join in on the party for a brief period of time. We look forward to seeing what marine life will come pay us a visit tomorrow!
