We headed out bright and early ready for some sharks this morning! As we approached the shallows we got our clients geared up and ready to jump in the cage at a moments notice. We had a little wait on our hands this morning and after a while we decided to re-anchor at a shallower spot. The wait continued but we learned a lot about the sharks and the area, on what was a slightly chilly morning, but we kept ourselves warm and spirits up with some lovely hot chocolate. And then all of a sudden out of the depths a small 2m white shark cruised up and passed the bait and decoy line and was on its way again. We got our cage divers in but it seemed this shark didn’t fancy checking our divers out. But we got ourselves a shark, and in these tough times that is what counts!
For our second trip, we went straight back to the shallows to pick up our cage and gear up! While the wind picked up slightly, the sun did come out and we had a nice warm morning on our hands. While we waited we chatted all things shark, but it turned out we were not with luck on this trip. This didn’t stop some of our more enthusiastic divers getting into the water and playing a bit of cage dive quiz! We headed over to the island for a trip to see the seals and shark alley, and were gifted right at the end with a lovely sighting of a lone southern right whale!
On our third trip, we got back and waited for around an hour and were rewarded with a great white shark! With a beautiful slow approach, we were able to track the shark as she made her way up the scent trail at the surface giving us time to get the first cage of divers in and to let every now there was indeed a shark around. This turned out to be the large female shark from yesterdays second trip, approximately 4.2m in length, she made some great passes around us even coming to and breaking the surface. There was also a second shark around, a little smaller in size than our first and quite shy not allowing us a chance to have a good look at her, however due to the white pigmentation on her dorsal fin we were able to distinguish her as a different shark to the other. A successful afternoon at sea.
