Although we were not lucky enough to have a Great White Shark visit us on the first trip of the day, we did manage to see a couple of cool animal species. Today, we decided to try the shallows again and anchored in between the other boats at around 9. After some time on the water, we were lucky enough to have a small pod of Bottlenose Dolphins move through, between the boats. These beautiful cetaceans did not stick around for very long but, only a couple of minutes later, we spotted some more dolphins.
The second group were a particularly special sight because they were Indian Ocean Humpback Dolphins. These dolphins are the rarest marine mammal on our coast with only an estimated 500 left in the wild. Usually, these dolphins are pretty shy but today, we had an awesome sighting with them coming slightly closer to feed on some mullets in our chum slick.
Whilst we waited, we also had a Puffadder Shyshark come up to check out the bait which was quite an interesting sight. These little cartilaginous fishes like to stay in sandy and rocky areas in shallow water and grow up to a meagre 60cm, unlike our White Sharks which can reach an impressive length of over 6m!
After waiting a little longer, we decided to take a stop by Geyser Rock to have a look at our Cape Fur Seals Before returning to the harbour.
The 2nd trip were fortunate enough to have a 3.5m Great White visit the boat, giving us some impressive displays before disappearing into the depths again. This majestic specimen also happened to be a recently tagged animal which is always exciting to see. The tag, which is completely non-invasive, clamping onto the dorsal fin of the shark, has a camera which allows one to see what these mysterious creatures get up to when they are not interacting with us.
