A shark tag at the end of the Rainbow!.. Most people expect a pot of gold but today the wonderful Sauvage family from Chicago donated towards an acoustic tag! To a marine biologist trying to study the white shark with no government funding this is just as good as a pot of gold! We launched before sunrise and within half an hour of anchoring, with a rainbow in the backdrop, we got our first shark. The 3.4m female was a shark we tagged in December 2015 and know as ‘Paisley’. Despite the slow swell and tide delays we had some remarkable white shark sightings with ‘mini Rosie’ making close passes for our divers in the cage. We look forward to deploying the new transmitter on a shark named ‘Sabine’ the eight year old daughter of the Sauvage family’s name and name of choice for their tagged shark. Sabine Winter is a very respected shark biologist in South Africa so we are glad of the name and look forward to sharing the info with the Sauvage family!
After a no sea day it was great to be back on the water. Our second trip launched just before lunch time and we were lucky as the sun came out. Although the sun was high up in the sky the south-westerly wind made it a bit chilly, but luckily that didn’t affect our shark activity. Arrived at the dive site we spotted little Nemo, its name comes from the smaller right pectoral fin. In total we had five different encounters with white sharks, which were entertaining us well while being out at sea.
If you are looking to get up close and personal with the great white shark then White Shark Diving in Gansbaai, and more specifically with Marine Dynamics, is a once-in-a-lifetime experience you won’t want to miss.
