We had an awesome early morning tour today, with large variety of different species popping up to say hi. We started off our tour with some Bronze Whaler Sharks around the cage and then had a couple of Short Tailed Stingrays make their way through the water column and up to the boat. Whilst watching these fascinating cartilaginous fish visit the cage, we were also treated to the sight of a Giant Petrel and a White Chinned Petrel, with these birds flying up and down the chum slick. We were enjoying our time with the Copper Sharks when out of the blue, a gigantic Great White Shark launched herself up at the bait, giving us all the surprise of a lifetime. An absolute beauty with a very distinct dorsal fin. We were all ecstatic to spot this apex predator and she gave us a couple of looks before moving off. It was not long before we caught sight of her again, this time, with her heading over to the whale boat. After checking out Dream Catcher, she came back and spent some more time with us, giving the divers a few close passes. Once everyone had had a chance in the water, we began to move off slowly, spotting a different White Shark cruising by the boat. This Shark took a dive under the boat and we didn’t get to see it again, but it was certainly a great end to the tour. On the way back to the harbour, we had 2 pairs of Southern Right Whales, an African Penguin and thousands of Cape Cormorants to keep us entertained.

For our second trip we once again headed for The shallows. Once we arrived, we were immediately visited by a southern right whale that passed behind our boat. It wasn’t long before we were visited by the first copper sharks. The water was a bit murky, so the copper sharks were very well hidden up until the last moment. We were also visited by a short-tailed stingray that briefly visited us from the murky depths, before disappearing back below. Suddenly one of our crew yelled the words everyone wanted to hear: “Great White!”. Across the waters a dark shadow approached our boat as the 5m great white became visible for everyone on board to see. This shark was one that had been tagged by Ocearch back in 2012. The photo of the dorsal fin will go into a national database, so we can see whether she has been seen in other areas of the country. After coming by our boat several times, she disappeared once again. After a great time at sea, we returned back to Kleinbaai harbour, and our guests left with another thing ticked off their bucket list.
