Trip 1
It was a gloomy start to the day but with time the rain stopped and the clouds cleared. The sharks didn’t mind the weather and it didn’t take long for them to show up with the smaller White sharks appearing first and dominating the start of the morning, including a shark with a fresh injury to the dorsal fin, which on closer inspection of photographs appears to be a small prop injury. The last half of the morning saw the large White sharks making their presence known with two of the bays current favourites making an appearance including “Mini Rosie” the 3.5m female that visits the area twice a year and “Sellendilloh” the 3.8m male with a SPOT tag attached to his dorsal fin. This is a satellite tag that allows this sharks movements along the coastline to be monitored of which is accessable online to the public by the research group who tagged the animal in 2012, Ocearch, here.
Trip 2
The second trip of the day was an exclusive for five gentleman visiting Cape Town from the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. The trip appeared to start off well with a small, pale White shark sighted on arrival, however this little one disappeared soon after it appeared. With time other sharks arrived including the most active of the afternoon, “Sellendilloh” who made passes for the rest of the trip every 4 minutes or so and some very impressive attempts on the bait and decoy lines. Before heading back to land we make the trip out to the Islands to have a cruise through Shark Alley and have a closer look at the Cape Fur seal colony on Geyser Rock.
