We launched bleary eyed and in semi darkness this morning from Gansbaai harbour and made our way around Danger Point to be met with the sight of two Southern Right whales frolicking in the light from the rising sun, what a way to start the day!

Once on anchor in the Shallows we had a Short-tailed stingray come by for a visit before we contemplated moving anchor sites due to no White shark sightings however as we prepared to do so our first White shark appeared. A large female, easily identifiable by the many dark scars that cover her trunk on both sides and a right pectoral fin which is bent up at a 90° angle. This is the first sighting of this female back in the bay since the start of June when she was seen for a few days around Slashfin. She really made the trip with sneaky attempts on the decoy and bait line stunning us all.

This female disappeared with a change in wind direction causing our scent trail to move in the opposite direction, yet after a quick anchor move we did see this shark again and two more including a small juvenile that appeared quite skittish and “Scarlett”, a shark well known to the team on board Slashfin and to many of our guests lucky enough to have met her.

The second trip of the day was off to a great start with sharks after not a long wait back on anchor. This trip saw the same three from the first trip with the addition of another large female, one that was spotted yesterday afternoon. The activity was something else on this trip with Sally the seal feeling the full power of a White shark as multiple impressive ambush attempts were made on the decoy.

The third and final trip was lucky enough to follow on from the second with sharks seen very quickly after arriving back on anchor. 3 sharks this time, and Scarlett was on form again this afternoon. We had a brief glimpse of the smaller scarred female, and the large female from the second trip as well! A shark filled day all round!
