We launched a little later this morning to try and avoid the rain! We got to the shallows and geared up and within minuets we had copper sharks circling around Slashfin. So we got our divers in the water and up close and personal with these magnificent sharks. Their colouration is awesome and you understand where they get their name from! We got some super close passes form some of these sharks much to our divers delight. While we were unable to spot a great white today, we did see a Southern Right Whale from our anchor spot as well as on the way back into the harbour, a nice little bonus towards the end of our trip!
For our second trip the rain caught us a little bit, so we got our divers dressed on land before heading out having missed the worst of the showers, which soon cleared. We secured the cage to the side of the boat and got ready for some sharks. With some data assistance from Breanna, who helped us out with the YSI recordings, collecting information about the temperature and dissolved oxygen content of the water, information that will aid our studies going forward. While we were conducting this research a copper shark popped up by the cage. Cue divers in the cage and getting face to face with the sharks. Even Zach, one of our volunteers braved the waters without a wetsuit to get upclose with these awesome sharks! We got some more stunning activity from these epic sharks, with some very happy divers we were also lucky to see a cape fur seal chowing down on a small puffadder shy shark, how the tables have turned! With happy cage divers we cleaned up, pulled the cage and headed back into the harbour after two stunning shark trips!
