As the sun rose over Gansbaai, we headed out on a flat, flat sea. Once we arrived at our dive site, and we put the cage in the water the copper sharks arrived. While they were interested in seeing our divers, they seemed a bit sluggish this morning. Our guests soon saw a southern right whale passing between us and Dyer Island, gently making it’s way through our bay. A cape fur seal came around as well and hung around the boat for a while, saying hi to all of our divers. Our divers did have a great time on the boat, and after we got back to shore, left happily with great memories.
Trip 3 was a lovely affair. The sea was still perfect and we spotted 2 groups of Southern Right Whales on our way out to the dive site. In the one group, a playful calf breached and although a little further away, this was really a spectacular way to start the tour. We also had some whales come a little closer to our vessel and after having done our dive, ended the tour with the sight of a couple more Southern Right Whales in the distance who were slowly travelling along. During the dive itself, shark activity was hot and happening, with sharks around throughout our tour. We had some incredible sights as these curious creatures came up to investigate again and again.
The divers were also treated to some epic visibility, with some being able to see as far as 2m under the water. Shades of gold and bronze filled the water column and we were all left in awe of what we were seeing. The animals were all larger and mostly female and absolutely stunning to behold. During the tour, we also got to see 2 sharks who were victims of entanglement, one with fishing line over her dorsal, and the other with a hook and some line in her mouth. We hope to help these girls out soon, by trying to free them from the line. Once everyone had spent some time in the water checking out the sharks at eye level, we set our course back to the harbour.
