Trip 1
We had surprisingly nice conditions this morning with the sun shining and a relatively flat sea so we were able to anchor in our favourite dive spot at the moment, the Geldsteen. Once on anchor we did not have too long to wait till our first shark arrived, a larger male approximately 3.5m in length, he did not stay around long once our second shark appeared. This second shark is one we have known very well since 2013 when we aided this shark in disentangling fishing line that had wrapped right around her body. She stuck around for the entire trip and was one of the most active sharks of the day. The other sharks that visited the boat this morning were three juveniles, two of which were happy to stay deep and glide around under the cage and one that turned out to be the star of the trip as he made very slow and close movements by the boat, very interested in the metal of the cage and boats’ propellers. The largest shark of the trip made an appearance right at the end and was estimated at approximately 4.0m in length, a large female we have seen around the last few days.

Trip 2
The second trip of the day launched and due to the increasing we sought protection behind the Islands and anchored to the side of Geyser Rock. It has been a while since we have anchored here however on arrival two sharks were spotted nearly straight away. We had two females, a juvenile and a sub-adult as our first two sharks, both of which stuck around for the first half of the trip before a male about 3.2m in length came cruising in and took over. This male stayed with us for the remainder of the trip even as two other sharks arrived. We also had a lone Cape Fur seal show up in front of us with a White shark in close proximity. This seal proceeded to tail the shark keeping behind and very close to the shark as if it was chasing the large predator but likely keeping out of harm’s way of the sharp and dangerous end of the shark…those teeth!

Both trips enjoyed a closer look at the inhabitants of Geyser Rock, the Cape Fur seals before heading back to land.
