A morning prediction of rain help true to some extend with some light drizzle that thankfully did not fill the full prediction and did not impact on our trips much at all. We had an overcast day today but conditions on the water were not bad with a very small swell and a slight wind that increased as the day went on leading to some choppier conditions towards the afternoon.
The first trip for Marine Dynamics were on site early as the only boat out for the morning and after approximately a 20 minute wait the first shark arrived. This was a Copper shark due to the copper colour of the dorsal surface but more commonly around here as Bronze Whalers, yet again due to the dorsal surface colour but also this species affiliation with hanging around harpooned whale carcasses along side whaling boats in the nineteenth century. We had some slow sightings in the beginning of the trip however as the trip progressed as did the Copper sharks activity with the last few divers having the sharks approach as close as is possible.
The second trip of the day launched and had Copper shark sightings soon after re-anchoring, yet within 30 minutes of the Copper sharks approaching another dark silhouette attracted the attention of the crew. This turned out to be a Great White, a large female, estimated at 3.8m in length and the same female that was seen on Friday. Not too long after the second Great White appeared, again this was the same smaller shark that was seen on Friday that again kept deeper and a little less activity then the identified, larger female. So fantastic to see these animals again in such uncertain times, heres to hoping they stick around…
