Whale, whale, whale, what do we have here? A mating group! Slashfin launched this morning and within minutes of leaving the harbour, a mating group of 4 Southern Right Whales was spotted in the distance. We slowed down as not to disrupt them, and as we continued past them they began to approach us! As we moved away, one began waving its flipper almost as if to say goodbye. These whales visit our shorelines between the months of June and December to mate and give birth. Come December, most will have begun their migration back to Antarctica to feed on their favourite food, krill. We anchored at our dive location with our hopes high that it was going to be a great day. We didn’t have to wait too long, with a familiar 2.6 meter male approaching the boat. He gave some spectacular views to our divers then disappeared. Our patience was tested and after no sightings for quite a while we decided to move anchor. After about 20 minutes at our new anchor location the same male shark approached and gave our divers some beautiful sighting. We headed back in to the harbour with smiles on our faces and tummies ready for some nice hot soup to warm up with.
With the tide a little lower than expected this afternoon, we had a short delay, but the Great White House Choir gave us a fantastic rendition of a few of the songs they are practicing at the moment. After some singing we were ready to go find some sharks!! We headed out of the harbour into a little wind which quickly died down when we got to our anchor spot in the shallows. As we geared up we got to know a little bit more about the sharks and the area while we waited for our first shark. Alfred our bait handler spotted a silhouette of a white shark about 50m from the cage, so we got our first group in and patiently waited for the shark to come a little closer. Patience paid of as our first group of divers got a super close view of the 3m white shark cruising around Slashfin. Activity came and went throughout the trip and as the sun started to set we began our clean up and had a fantastic cruise into the harbour as the sun started to fade.
