This morning’s first trip left a little later than normal so our divers got a bit of a lie in this morning! We’d heard whispers of a white shark in the area, so we were keen to get out on the water and into our suits. We had a glimpse of a copper shark this morning, but only fleeting. A cheeky cape fur seal was very playful around the cage as well so that was cool to see this morning. We stuck it out for this trip, but unfortunately were not rewarded for our patience. We did have fun though and learnt a lot about the interactions we have been observing over the last few months.

The second trip launched with hopes for the best, afterall that’s what we can do with wildlife. Once on anchor we were getting settled after those who were going into the water had wiggled into their wetsuits when out of nowhere a juvenile White shark appeard…you read right, a WHITE SHARK! This is our first White shark sighting in 14 days due to Orca moving through the area and the crew were absolutely estatic to finally have eyes back on one of these magnificent creatures. The shark, estimated at approximately 2.7m, made a few passes at the surface towards the decoy before turning its’ attention to the bait line, with slow precise movements before moving downstream and disappearing, unfortunately not to return again. The Copper sharks then appeared and stayed with us for the rest of the trip, taking chances to come to the surface every now and again, with what appears to be three different Coppers for the afternoon. The persistent Cape Fur seal from the first trip also rejoined us to make an all round great trip.

We are pleased to see a White shark back in the Gansbaai area and hope to update with more sightings over the next few days…
