It was an early start, but definitely worth it. We launched at around eight this morning from Kleinbaai harbour and were heading straight towards Joubertsdam, also known as the Shallows. We were lucky once again and got to see some Great White sharks. This morning we waited only for a little while before the first curious shark came closer to our vessel. In total we saw eight different white sharks during our trip. One was a well-known shark and his name is ‘Cutfin’, as the dorsal fin has been damaged by what we believe is a boats propellors. During the whole trip we had great shark activity. Also a stingray showed up twice to have a closer look at our divers in the cage.
The second trip of the day was for an Italian research team led by Dr Primo Micarelli. This group has been studying White sharks in the Kleinbaai area now for 13 years and have been with us since 2014. The professors and students from universities all over Italy join us on board Slashfin for five days taking behavioural data and identifying the White sharks we encounter. Today’s afternoon trip had a number of sharks around, all of which we have seen over the past few weeks, including one large female that our conservation trust DICT acoustically tagged on the 9th of May 2016. Fantastic to see her still around and also utilising both the Island and Shallow habitats! We also had two Short-Tailed stingrays gliding around the entire trip and some Humpback dolphins swimming very close by. A lovely afternoon spent out on the water studying the Great White shark.
