Sightings: Great White Sharks, Cape Fur seal
Location: Joubertsdam
Water Temperature: Moderate
Visibility: Poor
What an incredible way to start a day! Even though we were very early birds today, we most certainly got “the worm”, SIX of them to be exact, and by worms i mean Great White Sharks. The first shark that we saw after a couple of minutes of waiting was a 2.8m female, who cruised very slowly passed the cage, giving us a chance to have a good look. Then other two juvenile sharks came around being very nice and relaxed. And just as we thought our trip couldn’t get any better Shaun the shark came to the boat, making his usual deep passes along the cage. As we were a small group of people there wasn’t much changing happening inside of the cage, unlike outside of it where different white sharks came one after another. Just as we were about to make a decision to go visit Dyer Island and Geyser Rock to check out the seal colony, Clampy, a large female shark came out of nowhere showing all her power and impressive size! Once everyone was happy with the shark sightings, we headed to Dyer Island.
As the day progressed Slashfin was ready for its second trip. We made our way to the Shallows, to embrace our shark cage diving fun! Once again we had an amazing trip full of white shark activity. We started off with Shaun cruizing along the cage and doing sneaky attacks on our lines. Then a juvenile 2.5m female came for a couple of passes showing off her battle scars. But the star of this trip was definitely a 4.5m female named Clampy, who couldn’t get enough of us and kept coming back for our baits passing by really close to the cage. And then once again we were joined by two smaller sharks, coming from both sides of the cage. All in all a very special and eventful trip!
We spent the afternoon enjoying the sun and sharks on our third and final trip of the day. The shark appeared quickly with the juvenile female with the bite scar on her head and notch to the trailing edge of the dorsal fin being the first on site. Soon after her came the big sharks as Shaun, the 3.3m male, joined us again making it three out of three trips for this magnificent shark, as well as the big and beautiful Clampy who made some lovely passes by the boat and cage. The Cape Fur seal was back this afternoon and our guests were enthralled by the sight of the seal so close to the sharks.
