The first tour of the day we were really treated to a diverse and wonderful time on the water, spotting 4 of the Marine Big 5 as well as 3 Short Tailed Stingrays during their shark cage diving tour. We launched onto a perfect ocean and spotted some Southern Right Whale moms and babies on our way to our dive sight. Our first cage diving animals of the day were some curious Short Tailed Stingrays who were out and about, checking up on us. We did a fair amount of diving with the Stingrays before the shark activity started cooking. We were diving with Copper Sharks of various sizes and got some spectacular looks through the crystal-clear water. During our dive, we also had a cheeky adult Fur Seal come up and catch herself something to snack on next to the boat. during the tour, we also got to see a few more Southern Right Whales and by the end of our time on the water, we were also treated to the sight and sound of thousands of Cape Cormorants descending onto the ocean. on the way back to the harbour, we spotted two African Penguins to top off our tour.
The wind picked up a little for the second tour and we set out at around brunch time. We cruised over to the shallows back to the cage and then started our diving. We did our dive with some awesome Copper Sharks who were curious to investigate our operation, coming around again and again to the delight of all on board the tour. These sharks will get to a size of 3m and we got to see some larger animals today, with some gorgeous golden hues complementing the turquoise sea. We also got to see the same Cape Fur Seal that they had on the first tour of the day. This seal seems a little fame hungry, hanging around Slashfin for some attention. We had some truly stunning whale activity on the ride back into the harbour, with these magical creatures jumping out the water and putting a real show on for us. These were Southern Right Whales, who are famous for coming super close to shore.
As we left the harbour for our third trip of the day, two of the previous southern right whales were waiting for us on either side of the boat. Our guests got some nice photos as we slowly passed them on our way to The Shallows. Once we arrived, we hooked our cage up the side of the boat and started chumming. Soon the coppers arrived and our clients witness some beautiful passes. Our guests were soon greeted by a big Cape Fur Seal coming to The Shallows for some fish. Unfortunately the wind started picking up, so our crew picked up the cage and we showed our clients the two islands that make this area famous. Passing Geyser Rock we saw the seal colony our recent visitor came from, and on our other side we were greeted by Cape Cormorant, Kelp Gulls, and African Penguins. It’s a sad fact that the African Penguin has declined by 98% over the last century, leaving only 1000 breeding pairs on this island. As the wind started to pick up, we soon headed back to the harbour and to dry land.
