Sightings: Great White shark, Bronze whalers, and Short-tailed stingray
Location: Joubertsdam
Water Temperature: Moderate
Visibility: Low
A stunningly calm day in the bay here with low swells and a morning of little to no wind that slightly increased as the day progressed. We enjoyed the beautiful view of Gansbaai from the water as we waiting for our marine wildlife sightings this morning but soon enough our first shark appeared. The recent early arrivals to our trips have been those Bronze whalers as one was spotted off the front off the boat, we quickly got our divers into the water but the sharks appeared a bit slow for the first cage, the divers of which braved the water for over 30 minutes but once our second group of divers entered the water the activity started to heat up and we saw the Bronze whalers start to really show off. We had a number of individuals appear throughout the trip, mostly adults, that is to say close to the 3.0m length in size but also one smaller shark joining for the morning. Those large and graceful Short-tailed stingrays were not far behind as two spent the rest of the trip coming and going from view even with the sharks seen in close proximity. It wasn’t till towards the end of our trip that things really started to get exciting on board Slashfin as, Khwezi, one of our line handlers spotted a larger, darker shadow lurking deep, slowly making its way to back of the boat and to the surface we saw that finally the Great White shark had arrived! The same 3.3m male that we have encountered over the last three days had decided we were the lucky ones to be graced with his presence and whilst it was right at the end of our stay on anchor our patience paid off as he circled multiple times and even gave us some toothy smiles.
The afternoon progressed with our second trip of the day heading back into the Shallows and onto anchor. The Bronze whaler sharks were yet again the first to surface and just like this morning moved around the boat silently appearing out of the murky depths right, left and infront. The entire trip consisted of these golden sharks. Moving in and out of view consistantly for the afternoon our guests were able to enjoy some beautiful views from the boat and also from the cage.
