An early morning for the guests and crew at Marine Dynamics as we were looking ahead at a day proceeding with increased westerly winds. The morning, however started off beautifully as we headed out of Kleinbaai harbour as first shark cage diving vessel on the water. The sharks arrived quickly with one of the bay’s current females cruising around the front of the boat to start off the day. Before long another of the female White sharks appeared and the smaller male in the bay and one of our all-time favourites, Mini Nemo. This animal is one of Dyer Island Conservation Trusts study animals with a collaborative study from 2015 with Sussex University, Stellenbosch and University of Cape Town in which biopsies were collected from a number of animals for genetic, toxicology and backing up behavioural studies. The Copper sharks also took their chances this morning, quickly moving around the boat when the Whites disappeared before making a quick getaway with any indicator of the larger sharks coming back. The day progressed with a number of other sharks visiting for the afternoon including the large male in the bay with three darkly pigmented spots that helps us distinguish it from any of the others, the large female with a bite mark on the right flank that has been gracing us with her presence since the sharks reappeared and another female, back again with a chunk of the tip of her tail missing. All in all a slow day with the sharks coming and going but a successful day, something we are so grateful to be able to say after all this is wildlife we are dealing with and nothing is guaranteed!
