This morning’s trip tested all our patience with a 2.5 hour wait for our first shark sighting, the good news is that it was a beautiful day to be out on the water and eventually we did have some amazing shark views. The first shark to show up was a large, bulky male estimated at approximately 4.2m in length, and one we are very familiar with, “Tiger”. This male is usually seen during our Summer season in the Shallows for a period of a few days once a year, in 2017 he appeared for one trip on the 18th of January and that was it until today. He gained his name from the stripe-like bite scars that cover his head and trunk that we documented as fresh wounds back in 2015. The team here at Marine Dynamics is so pleased to see this shark back and so were our guests! We had other White sharks visit after “Tiger” with another male approximately 3.4m in length and three juveniles coming and going throughout the trip. A long wait but a wait well worth it!
The second trip of the day started off well with a large shadow spotted in the distance and a smaller shadow not too long after however it took a little while for any shark to approach the boat. We saw much the same individuals as the first trip including the largest “Tiger” but had a new addition to the day this afternoon with a juvenile arriving known to us as “Dolphin Fin”. A strange name for a White shark many of you would say, however it is to help us discribe the unique shape to his dorsal fin which has a distinct curve to the tip much like a dolphin. This small, juvenile male is part of Dyer Island Conservation Trust’s biopsy program in collaboration with Sussex, Stellenbosch and Cape Town University and specifically focuses on genetics, behavioural and toxicology studies. It was fantastic to have this feisty little male back around the boat.
A stunning day out on the water with some old “fishy” friends coming to visit the team and guests of Marine Dynamics
