Happy Shark Awareness Day!

Our guests to Kleinbaai today chose the perfect day to visit the White shark capitol of the world as today was International Shark Awareness Day!

We launched with the sun rising and headed straight to the Geldsteen, an area we have been having a lot of success with shark sightings lately. Once on anchor we had a 20 minute wait for our first shark to arrive, enough time for all our divers to get ready. This first shark was a shark well known along the South African coastline as “Sellendilloh”, he is so well known as in 2012 he was tagged by Ocearch with a satellite tag and his movements have been monitored, to see more on this shark please visit this website here. This shark was one of the more active sharks around today coming and going and getting nice and close to the cage. We also had a juvenile White shark we know as “High Five” as he has a 90°C bend in his right pectoral fin, this little shark stuck around for quite some time. We were also pleased to see a large female show up, one we have seen on and off for the last two months, whilst she doesn’t visit us very often, her size is quite impressive and she was the largest shark to grace the boat today.

The second trip of the day launched and headed straight back to the Geldsteen where we were met by our first White shark five minutes after arrival. “Fishing Line Shark” made an appearance this afternoon and we also welcomed back “High Five” and one of our acoustically tagged animals. The high-light of this trip was a large female, one that has been adopted and named “Khalessi”, and whilst she spent the first few passes cruising slowly by quite deep however things started to get exciting when she moved from the depths to the surface and made multiple attempts on the bait and decoy line. This shark has been known to have some awesome activity around the boat however we have not seen her for a while so it was fantastic to have her back and to exhibit such amazing behaviour.

Both trips enjoyed a cruise through Shark Alley to have a closer look at Geyser Rock and Dyer Island and its bird and seal inhabitants.

A fantastic and appropriate day to appreciate such a beautiful creature!
