Sightings: Great White Shark and Bronze whalers
Location: Joubertsdam
Water Temperature: Moderate
Visibility: Poor
The conditions had calmed down considerably since yesterday, with Wednesday weather throwing wind, swell and rain our way, it was great to get back onto sea with the wind dropping to a slight breeze and a much slighter swell with clear skies overhead for the day. We had the entire bay to ourselves today and with that it appeared the sharks attention as within moments of anchoring for the morning we had our first shark sighting, a large Bronze whaler sneaking up from the murky depths. The first cage of divers were prepped and as the last few entered the water a Great White shark appeared. It was Shaun, the 3.3m male that has been seen on and off since the start of May this year. He continued to visit the surface and close to the boat and cage throughout the trip, with a few short, slower patches of activity here and there due to the winds changing direction and the Bronze whaler sharks making a appearance, however we experienced such amazing shark action with all our divers having the experiencing of being in the water with a Great White shark.
We had high hopes for the afternoon trip after such a stellar experience in the morning, however due to the nature of wild animals you never truly know what you are going to encounter, yet we struck lucky again for our second group with the Bronze whalers arriving soon after we had and Shaun the Great White shark not far behind them. We finished the day as we started with continuous activity from both the White shark and Bronze whalers. We had some seriously close passes by the cage, which really helped as the visibility was poor, and some spectacular surface breaks by both species of shark. A wonderful afternoon of shark watching and diving.
