Conditions: A flat sea with the sun occasionally breaking through.
We headed out this morning onto a flat, flat sea. It was slightly overcast, but throughout the trip the sun started to break through. Once we arrived at our dive site in The Shallows, it took a moment or two, but soon the copper sharks arrived. Our divers jumped into the cage and were exhilarated as they saw the sharks pass really close to the cage. Soon a cape fur seal visited our guests as well. The combination of copper sharks and cape fur seals made for an excellent trip. As our divers were enjoying an excellent time in the water, we were visited by one of Dyer Island’s residents: Cape Cormorants. Hundreds of Cape Cormorants flew past us, from the mainland to their breeding sites on the island. On our way back, we passed a southern right whale calf as well. Overall our guests enjoyed a nice trip.
The second tour launched just after brunch and saw us heading straight towards Jouberts Dam to get cracking with our dive. The wind had dropped a lot from yesterday, so it was a perfect day to be out in the sunshine waiting for some Copper Sharks to appear. After we spotted the first of these cute cartilaginous fish, we geared up our divers and got our first group into the cage to dive with a larger specimen. After our first sharks, we had a bit of a lull in activity, so we played a shark quiz in the cage, testing the knowledge of our divers until our coppers appeared once more. It was smooth sailing from here on with some nice, close encounters with these majestic predators. Our divers had about 1m of visibility which allowed them to get some good views from within the cage whilst the rest of us observed from above. We also had a large Cape Fur Seal pay us a visit on this tour, with this cheeky creature hanging around the front of the cage for a bit before pushing off.
Our final trip for the day had some luck with the sharks, seeing their first Bronzie only minutes after getting back to anchor. We had some larger sharks around with some impressive girth on them Copper Sharks are for the most part a slender species, but some of these females looked to be carrying some extra weight as the moved past the cage. We also got to see some smaller animals including a little one with a tag on it. it is always great to see science in action out there, so we recorded what we got to see and then spent some time just watching as these graceful animals came back again and again, giving us a lovely show before we picked up anchor and head back in after a 3 trip day.
