We launched bright and early this morning on our mission to find the sharks. We got to the shallows anchored up and got our guests into their wetsuits. We got a shark pretty quickly on this trip, and lots of excitement as we had a copper shark that was keen to play this morning. We got our first group of divers in and they got some fantastic clos passes by this 2.5m copper shark. Through the rest of the trip we had another shark join us at close to 2.8m, again another copper shark, but beautiful still. We also had a Cape Gannet diving for some of the mullet this morning, and while we didn’t get a white shark, we did encounter a lovely mother calf pair of southern right whales on the way back to Gansbaai harbour due to the low tide in Kleinbaai.
For our second trip we launched out of Gansbaai and encountered more southern right whales on our way around Danger Point. A great start to the trip, and it didn’t take us long to get a shark on this trip either. With the copper sharks eager to please, we got some nice activity from 3 different sharks on this trip including a feisty but sneaky male content on surprising us from deep and then out of nowhere a Great White appeared! This shark was the 4m female known to us know as little Scarlett, with very similar scars and a tail cut like our iconic shark Scarlett! She gave our second group of cage divers a lovely close pass by the cage and made some stunning approaches on the bait and decoy line allowing all onboard a chance to see the largest predatory shark to currently roam the oceans. With some very happy divers indeed we headed back to the harbour to collect our third group of guests for the day.
We got to the shallows this afternoon in stunning sunshine, and again the first shark to the boat was a copper shark. We got some nice passes from this shark and got our divers in the cage. The copper sharks were alittle on the shy side this afternoon but our guests still braved the chilly Atlantic waters to give shark cage diving a go. It was not only the sharks that came to say hello this afternoon but a Short-tailed stingray, the largest marine based stingray in South Africa, came into view at the surface a few times. Before heading back to land we made a trip out to the Islands to have a closer look at the Cape Fur seal colony on Geyser Rock, this afternoon these pinnipeds appeared relaxed and happy in the waters of Shark Alley and we were able to see them frolicking around in the sea nice and close!
