Sightings: Great White shark, Bronze whalers and Cape Fur seal
Location: Joubertsdam
Water Temperature: Moderate
Visibility: Moderate
Perhaps we should rename today sharktacular Saturday as that is exactly how we feel here at Marine Dynamics about our experiences out on the water for the day. The conditions were pleasant with only a minimal swell and slight wind coming through the area, the skies and seas whilst a tad cold were bright and clear. We started off well with a Bronze whaler appearing only moments after we made anchor and close after followed a friendly Cape Fur seal that seemed content on chasing the small bait fish around the boat and relaxing on the surface in the shade of our boat. We heard word that a White shark may be in the area and made a change to our anchor spot and were greeted with such a welcome sight – a male White shark, just over 3.0m in length and showing some beautiful behaviour around the boat. This male can be traced back to early/mid 2017 when it was documented on a number of trips in that time. It is great to say that this shark has grown nicely in that time and whilst we did spot a fishing hook and trace of line on it’s right side this shark looks and behaves fantastically and we hope to have more to report on it as we go into next week.
For our second trip of the day we headed back to the shallows hopeful for another lucky sighting of a great white shark. We didn’t have to wait too long at all as the same great white from the first trip seemed to be hanging around. So we got our divers in the cage so they could witness this awesome shark in stunning visibility today! This male gave us some fantastic activity so that our divers in the water and guests on board all got to witness some fantastic white shark action! He was soon followed by a couple of copper sharks that were glinting in the afternoon sunshine, showing off where they get their names from! With a happy boat of shark cage divers we headed off to the harbour to enjoy some soup and bread at the great white house.
