We were back on the water after a day off due to some bad weather conditions, however the conditions had carried on a little into today and we still had some swell and wind around and it was for this reason we had to anchor in the Shallows. The first trip of the day was an exclusive for a group of friends from Oman who are visiting Cape Town for a few days and wished to see the White sharks. Once on anchor we had quite a wait for our first shark to arrive however our group was very patient and it paid off as a big, dark, sharky shadow was spotted! This shark slowly made its’ way around to the front of the cage and our divers jumped in, not only did this shark save the day it also brought with it a larger shark that was happy to get nice and close for our divers to see, this made diving easier as we struggled with the visibility today.

The second trip of the day launched and while the swell had decreased we still had a wind lingering. While approaching the cage our first shark was spotted, quite easily as the dark shape of the shark was highlighted by the light, murky waters. We had the same sharks as the first trip but also two new additions, one being a male about 3.3m in length named “Poseidon”. This shark is a part of the Ocearch satellite tagging program that took place along this coastline in 2012 however his tag has since fallen off. We have seen this shark over the last few weeks, however all sightings have been around the Island so it was nice to see him utilizing the entire area. We also saw a very friendly Hagfish also known as a Slime eel, that was happy to come nice and close to our divers, who didn’t have the same friendly feelings towards having it so close to them in the water!

A fun day out on sea with some very special fishy visitors! Thank you to all that joined us today on board Slashfin!
