A beautiful day to be out on the water with calm, flat seas and clear blue skies! We headed out to the island after a successful sightings yesterday with our International Marine Volunteers. Once on anchor we patiently awaited for signs of some big fish! Unfortunately no such luck in that area and after a tip off from one of the other boats we moved and towards the end of our tripmorning we were greeted by a lovely sight, a large male White shark, one we had seen yesterday entangled in what appears to be a thin rope or line sadly. Not too long after another male was appeared and gave our last cage of divers a very close and slow pass. Whilst waiting this morning, scanning the waters for the sight of a shark we were lucky enough to see an attempted predation of a Cape Fur seal by a White shark. One of the great things about being anchored at the Islands is that we get to watch the seals coming and going from their fishing trips and every now and again we get to witness an unlucky seal become the target of a shark, however this small seal had luck and skill on its’ side today as it frantickly dived out of the way…seal 1 shark 0! The second trip of the day headed back out and in minutes we had seen a juvenile cruising at the boat next to us and then out from under our cage glided one of the large males to noises of awe and excitement on board. This male was also joined by another large male, very clean without any markings yet with a very serrated dorsal fin. It appears that the larger males are dominating the area at the moment. We also spotted another juvenile swimming around the back of the boat, appearing as if it did not want to get to close possibly abit unsure about the big boys patrolling! A fantastic day around the Islands, we are so happy to see the sharks back with such activity we haven’t seen in weeks…
