Rise and shine shark cage divers we have an experience of a lifetime waiting! To see White sharks is on the bucketlist of many people worldwide and Gansbaai is one of only a few places globally you have the chance of coming face to face and learning a bit more about these fascinating yet ellusive creatures in a safe and educational environment! However relying on wildlife means that everyday is different and today was one of those days that we at Marine Dynamics, enjoyed immensly! We launched from Gansbaai harbour and made our way around Danger Point, we ran into no danger but rather some Cape Fur seals and some of the oceans’ gentle giants, some Bryde’s whale. Whilst this species is usually on the shy side we had some magnificent views of the top of it’s head as well as its lovely dorsal fin, one of the features allowing us to identify this species against the other main ones we generally see, the Southern Rights that do not have a dorsal fin and the Humpbacks that have that distinctive hump infront of there fin! Once we had a nice look we were back on our way into the Shallows but before anchoring a large pod of Bottlenose dolphins were spotted, energetically moving through the bay. WOW! We hadn’t even anchored and the action had begun! Once on site we had a 40 minute wait till the first shark was seen, this was “Little Smithy” a juvenile female that was identified with the photographs from todays trip thanks to distinctive markings and her dorsal fin. We also had “Jaocb” come by soon after yet after two passes he left for the trip. The stars of today would have to have been one of our acoustically tagged sharks that stuck around for the entire trip and one of the last sharks, a large female, estimated at an impressive 4.0m in length baring a very serrated dorsal fin, one this bay has seen before. Whilst this big female gracefully glided by she also kicked things up a notch with some speedy turns we generally associated with some of the smaller individuals, a great end to any trip! Whales, seals, dolphins and sharks, oh my! If only we had found the African Penguin we would have collected the Marine Big 5 today, luckily if our visitors have the chance they can pop by our APSS centre and see penguins currently undergoing rehabilitation. A day full of great sightings…
