Wow! What a start to the day, we launched bright and early and were first on anchor in the Shallows. The conditions were fantastic with little to no swell, a slight wind and the sun shining brightly for us to enjoy and it appears the sharks also enjoyed a little bit of Vitamin D this morning with the first shark arriving quickly and the activity continuing throughout the trip as sharks came flying in! Our first arrival was ‘Sarko’ the small but feisty female we have been on first name basis with for a year now, she didn’t disappoint however she did disappear quickly with the arrival of another slightly larger and even more active shark. This new shark is very similar to ‘Sarko’ in that she has similar dark scaring along the flanks and also mimics that beautiful behaviour we associate with ‘Sarko’. This newer female to the bay was the star of the morning with many breaches and leaps around the boat as well as close passes by the cage allowing those in the water and onboard to truly appreciate this magnificent animal. We had one more White shark visit before the trip was done with the largest of the day, ‘Scarlett’ making a brief appearance, showing of her usual behaviour of slow passes and spy hopping. This group was also treated to the sight of Copper sharks, Short-tailed stingrays and even a Sun fish on our way around Danger Point to Gansbaai harbour.

The second trip of the day launched back around Danger Point and back onto anchor, with a little wait ‘Sarko” reappeared. We also encountered a second shark however this shark was very shy and would not stick around or truly surface. This trip was one for the Copper sharks, with approximately 5 individual Copper’s showing up and making some thrilling passes. The Short-tailed stingray also reappeared and joined the great mix of Elasmobranchs that the day and revealed.

The third and final trip saw a new addition for the day in the shape of a very small juvenile female appearing, very clean with minimal scaring. We had one of the females that has been in the bay recently but not a frequent visitor to the boat unfortunately. This shark is one of our sponsored sharks from 2016 and was named ‘Taryn-it-up’ by those that adopted her. The third and final shark of the day was our amazingly active female from the first trip turning up to finish the day with a bang. The Copper sharks returned to make three out of three successful trips for the both White and Copper sharks.
