There are few people who enjoy waking up very early especially on a Sunday, however this morning was well worth it with a stunning sunrise to greet us as we left the harbour and as we soon found out some fantastic shark activity! We were the first onto anchor and did not have long to wait for our first shark to show up. The morning was dominated by the smaller White sharks, with many feisty juveniles making their presence known to us. The largest shark of the trip measured in at approximately 3.6m and was one of the most active sharks of the trip, coming in fast and close and allowing our divers a very close look as he glided by. One of the small juvenile females was one of our recently tagged individuals and whilst we hope that our listening stations are picking up on her tag we also are grateful to be able to observe her movements from our cage diving vessel Slashfin.
The second trip headed back out and by this point the wind and swell had died down and it warmed up so much that taking a dip in the icy Atlantic water didn’t seem like a bad idea. We had a shark around not long after arriving back, many of our previous sharks re-appeared for this trip however with the addition of a few sub-adult White sharks. Yet again our largest shark of the trip was the same male from this morning, however he did not stick around long during this trip.
The third and final trip for the day was an exclusive for 38 school rugby players from Manchester, United Kingdom who have been winning their way through South Africa and had a winning day out on the water. The two new additions to the trip this afternoon were also the most active and impressive! Both males, one is approximately 3.8m in length and was named “Dave” a few weeks ago by one of our visitors, the other was “Sellendilloh”, a satellite tagged shark that can be tracked through the Ocearch website here.
The trips also were treated to the sight of a Short-tailed stingray, another of the bays graceful creatures.
A beautiful day to be outside on the water and learning about the White shark!
