A chilly wind hung in the air as we headed out onto a bumpy sea into the morning light. We arrived at our dive-site in The Shallows and quickly got the cage into the water. As our guests got into their wetsuits, the first copper shark arrived. Our divers got into the cold Atlantic water (“It’s a bit nippy”) and witnessed the sharks right up close. This side of South Africa is influenced by the Benguela current, which comes up from the Southern Ocean, making our waters quite a lot colder than towards the east of South Africa. As the trip progressed, the air temperature started to rise, and our guests gladly sat in the sun as they watch the sharks swim below them. By the end of the trip, our guests were said goodbye to the sharks and enjoyed some nice warm soup and bread at the Great White House.
As we headed out on our second trip, it didn’t take long for the copper sharks to once again check us out. Our excited guests couldn’t wait to get into the cage as the sharks passed by. The whole trip was filled with copper sharks coming up out of the depth. Suddenly out of the deep a small female white shark shot up and surprised our guests and our crew. It disappeared quickly into the murky waters. The vessel softly leaned over to one side as everyone on board waiting for the white shark to show herself again. And she didn’t leave us disappointed. She burst up out of the depth once more to everyone’s astonishing gasps. At the end of the trip, as the crew started to pack everything away, even a Cape fur seal came around to wave goodbye to everyone.
The third trip had heard rumors of a white shark being in the area and were hopeful to get a look. After a short time with the coppers, sure enough the same shark from trip 2 came to pay us a visit. It is amazing to see how quickly they can leep from the water almost unnoticed before. Thankfully, she decided to make a few more passes for our guests before departing for the day. We realized just how lucky we were to be able to see two different species of sharks this afternoon. Today’s diver of the day was 81 years old!! It’s never too late to share exciting new adventures.
