We launched our vessel Slashfin early from the Kleinbaai harbour. Arrived in the Jubertsdam, we dropped anchor and were ready to see some sharks. This morning it took a little longer for us to see the first Great White shark, but it was worth the wait. Our first shark was a juvenile around three meters, but unfortunately it just passed once. However, shortly after the juvenile disappeared a four meter female showed up and gave us a great show. She was very active around the boat and great to watch. Later on during the trip we encountered another two juveniles around three meters as well.

The second trip of the day was off to a slow start with a shark appearing approximately 30 minutes after we did, however this was a complete surprise approach and as soon as she appeared she disappeared but we were lucky enough to have a few more sightings of this female throughout the trip. The second shark was just a little larger than our first, around the 3.5m length, and very darkly coloured on he dorsal surface. This shark much like our first did not appear happy to stick around. Towards the end of our trip three different juvniles appeared and were happy to get a little closer to the cage and the first female reappeared making a stunning attempt on the baitline ending with the shark exposed above the water from her pectoral fins to her snout, of which we were able to watch her slowly sink back into the water. We also had nearly a constant presence of Short-tailed stingrays around this trip, coming up and gliding by investigating the happenings around the boat.

The last trip of the day was an exclusive for a couple visiting from Dubai. The sharks arrived about 30 minutes after the boat did and included two large animals approximately 4.0m in length and two juveniles under 3.0m in length, one of which was “Sarko” a juvenile that was present in the bay much of the last few months of 2016. I quick trip by the Islands to finish off a successful day of White shark sightings.
