Conditions: Small bursts of rain throughout day but overall clear skies with slight wind and swell.
Today started off with a short drive to Gansbaai harbour to launch Slashfin due to low tide levels, a chilly but exciting boat ride around Danger Point and into the Shallows we moved to locate our cage, which had already been anchored on site earlier on in the morning before our guests boarded the boat. To everyones shock a White shark appeared within five minutes of the boat settling, as avery pale coloured juvenile made a sneak approach on our decoy line, taking Sally the decoy seal off her rope and disappearing not to be seen again today. The first group of divers eagerly accended into the cage and waited, with much bobbing around and hoping our second shark for the morning appeared, the estimated 4.0m female we have taken to calling Scarletjie, having been sighted in the bay for just over a week we were happy to see here again however much like our first shark she to disappeared. During this time we had some entertaining and interesting views of a young Cape Fur seal having its morning meal in the form of a small shyshark that it proceeded to toss through the air. The third and final shark sighting of the first trip was a show stopper as a darkly coloured large female came into view and within moments of appearing our team identified her as Clubtail, an estimated 3.8m female White shark that was last seen back in April of this year. She is missing much of the upper lobe to her caudal fin or tail, hence the nickname, and even with old injury she is still one of our favourites around the boat in 2018 and appears to be looking well, welcome back Clubtail!
The next group of hopeful White shark cage divers took to the water with our team hoping for a repeat of the first trip, and whilst this group practiced some great patience and watched the small Cape Fur seal munching down on another shyshark, nature in all its strange, wild and unpredictable ways, a Great White shark did not appear during this trip. We thank our guests for their understanding onboard.
Last up for the day was an exclusive trip for a couple visiting from Italy. A long held dream of seeing their favourite animal was realised during the afternoon as at first the Bronze Whalers paid the boat a visit and then the one we had all fingers crossed for…a Great White shark. Scarletjie, the 4.0m female with very distinctive scars showed up for one more visit to end the day!
