The first shark of the day showed its fin about 40 minutes into our time on the water. This individual was on the shy side and the activity came and went with quite a lot of waiting in between. The decrease in activity has been linked to a few things, one of the major theories is the presence of Orcas in the area (as seen in our previous blog here). Being one of the only known predators to the White shark, as witnessed in America and Australia, we do worry about the effect that having such animals sticking around in the area may have on our White shark population and its behaviour! The second trip launched for the day with feelings of apprehension present, would we see sharks? We were lucky enough to have a small individual around the boat soon after we arrived. This small, yet easily identifiable individual, stuck around the entire trip was keeping it’s distance and only returning every 20 minutes. During our second cage we had the second shark of the trip arrive and boy did it leave our divers with a great impression, coming in at around 3.0m, this male came hurtling into the area and make some fantastic attempts at the bait and decoy line! A superb shark to have around after the lack of activity seen in the area over the past few days! This male is one we saw this time last year and was nicknamed “Mini Mike” due to the scarring on the side of its check making it look like it has been punched. A slow but successful day out on Slashfin…
