Slashfin launched from Kleinbaai harbour with high hopes for today, especially when our skipper spotted dolphins as we passed the surf line! They were very quick and disappeared without a trace, most likely on the hunt for some breakfast! We made our way to the shallows, where our patience would be tested. After waiting over an hour with the only luck being a sighting of a pintado petrel, we decided to change anchor locations. At our new location, not very far from where we were before, we only waited about 25 minutes before we finally had a visitor. It was the always curious 3 meter male that we’ve seen the past few days. He’s easily identifiable with white scarring on his left gill slits and a bite mark on the right side of his body. He is a stunning shark that loves to show off his agility and speed. Our first cage of divers were lucky to get to also see him underwater as he came close to the cage, attempting to sneak up on Sally the seal decoy. Unfortunately he didn’t stick around for our other divers to see him underwater, but after waiting so patiently, we were grateful that he came by for a visit.
The second trip of the day was an exclusive for a couple visiting from the United Kingdom. We had a slow start with a bit of a wait for a shark sightings however it was a beautiful afternoon out on the water and we had the entire bay to ourselves. The first shark came with a slight warning as the school of mullet towards the front of the boat started to circle further and further away and as we finally caught a glimpse of that lovely White shark slowly ascending from below to investigate the seal decoy. This was the male shark from the first trip, back again to say hello he did not seemed fussed to stick around especially with the arrival of our second shark, a female very similar in size to the male. This shark was happy to keep around giving us some great passes allowing our two guests in the cage some amazing views and then again from above the water when they came up for an above surface view. Before making our way back to the harbour we passed by Shark Alley and had a look at the Cape Fur seal colony.
