As we headed out to the shallows this morning, we caught a glimpse of a southern right whale! The mother calf pair were milling around in the shallows enjoying their morning! As we went off to anchor we got the cage prepped and briefed our divers as to the plan of the day. We got into some nice discussions about the sharks and wider ecosystem while we waited for a shark this morning. While we were patient it seemed not to be our morning, as we approached the end of the trip, we got some of our keen divers in the cage to play some cage dive quiz! Remember those that know their stuff get prizes!! Unfortunately we weren’t able to get a shark o this trip, but we headed over to the seals, and had a cruise through shark alley to see what was going on there!
For our second trip we ventured back to the shallows and swiftly moved our anchor to try our luck in another spot. We briefly caught a glimpse of a bronze whaler or copper shark. These sharks get to around 3m in size so they are still a formidable shark to see at the surface. We persevered and through wind and rain, which did not dampen our spirits of catching a glimpse of a great white shark. Eventually the 4m female that we have been seeing over the last few days surfaced and gave our divers some spectacular sightings from the cage. Such is shark cage diving! A great afternoon on the water!
