With 2 trips today we launched a little later this morning, and headed straight for the shallows. As we approached the shallows this morning we were very lucky to spot a mother calf pair of southern right whales. We slowed so as not to disturb them and enjoyed this lucky encounter. Having passed them we approached our dive spot and dropped anchor. We prepped the cage and got our divers ready to meet some sharks. We didn’t wait long at all to get our first shark, one of the copper sharks that has been hanging around in the shallows for the last couple of days. While activity started a little slowly this morning, it increased throughout the trip with some very consistent sightings, and even an opportunity for our divers to go again. We had the bonus of a short tailed stingray at the bait line as well, which is always lovely to witness. With a happy boatful of guests we left our cage in the shallows and headed back to the harbour to collect our next group of guests.
In the afternoon we headed straight back to the shallows, and once again saw the mother and calf southern right whales. Once we were anchored at our dive site and prepared the cage on the side of the boat, our copper sharks were back. Our divers went straight into the water and we were blessed with continuous activity for the rest of the afternoon. These copper sharks become sexually mature between 13 and 19 years old, and grow up to between 25 and 30 years old. A huge flok of Cape cormorants flew between Slashfin and the coast, and some of our guests were also witness to a short-tailed stingray, before it disappeared in the murky waters. Later in the afternoon another whale swam by. Overall our guests were incredibly happy with the diversity they saw, and when we headed back they enjoyed a nice bowl of hot vegetable soup and bread.
