We were feeling positive this morning as we rode out to the shallows in search of our elusive White Sharks. With the sun shining and a gentle swell rolling through, we were first joined by several of our avian friends. Most notably 4 Southern Giant Petrels gently bobbed around us in a small group, potentially discussing the feast that could be had from the Sperm Whale that recently washed ashore along our coastline.
Although we had no sharks today, our guests in the cage were rewarded for their dedication and persistence to brave our chilly waters, with a very cheeky Cape Fur Seal interaction towards the end of our trip. The action was great for us to observe above the water and our guests were able to get a great feel for how these agile predators move through the water. Time for some Fur Seal Fun Facts!
- Cape Fur Seals tend to hunt alone but will form ‘hunting parties’ of around 15 individuals when venturing to feed. So our interaction today with the seal was more typical of this lone hunting behaviour.
- Cape Fur Seals are able to sleep both at sea and on land! While at sea the Cape Fur Seal is able to rest different parts of its brain through a sleep cycle, and remain floating by paddling with one foreflipper.
We shall not be deterred however and will continue to work hard in search of our sharks, with big swells rolling in this weekend, we remain hopeful that we will come across our sharks towards the start of next week.
