The first trip of the day launched early and headed to the Island. It was a slow start this morning and after 40 minutes of no activity the boat moved anchor to a new area and had the first shark of the day appear only 15 minutes later! Whilst this trip started off a bit slow it was well worth the wait for those on board as they were lucky enough to witness an attempted predation between a White shark and a Cape fur seal. During some of our trips, our sister company’s vessel, Whale Whisperer comes by to have a look at the sharks , today they got more than they bargined for as the seal swam in front of the boat and was met by an estimated 3.5m White shark intent on a feed! What followed was a game of cat and mouse as the shark zigged and zagged after the frantically porpoising seal, in the end it appears that it may have been the seal’s lucky day! Although it took all on board Slashfin and Whale Whisperer by surprise , we were lucky enough to capture some photographs as seen below and incredible footage you can view here. The second trip started off with a bang as our first shark arrived about 20 minutes after anchoring and spent the first few minutes making speedy attempts on both the bait and decoy line, leaping above the water’s surface numerous times! The bait and decoy were not the only things that were attracting the sharks today! We also had three Giant petrels around the boat this afternoon, all three happily floating on the surface until of course the sharks started circling. Just like the seal from the first trip these birds got away just in the nick of time with a few very close calls! An interesting and eventful day out on the water…
